Sample Requirements:
- Swab in aerobic or anaerobic transport media;
- Tissue in a sterile container with a few drops of sterile saline;
- Fluid in blood culture bottle;
- Aspirated material in a capped syringe
(must remove the needle and expel any air bubbles)
Turn Around Time:
3 business days for negative results, longer depending on growth
Collection Protocol:
- Indicate the source of the specimen, clinical history, antimicrobial
therapy, suspected disease on the submission form. - Storage: Refrigerate swab and urine if transport with be delayed
more than 48 hours. - Refrigerate tissue and fluid; ship on ice.
- Room temperature for blood culture bottles.
