Aerobic & Anaerobic Cultures
Description:
Aerobic culture includes organism ID and sensitivities.
Anaerobic culture includes organism ID only.

Sample Requirements:
- Swab in aerobic or anaerobic transport media;
- Tissue in a sterile container with a few drops of sterile saline;
- Fluid in blood culture bottle;
- Aspirated material in a capped syringe
(needle must be removed and any air bubbles expelled)
Turn Around Time:
3 – 4 business days for negative results; longer depending on growth
Collection Protocol:
- Collect specimens prior to antimicrobial therapy if possible.
- Storage: Refrigerate swab if transport will be delayed over
48 hours. - Refrigerate tissue and fluid; ship on ice.
- Indicate the source of the specimen, clinical history,
antimicrobial therapy (for follow-up test), and suspected
disease on the submission form.
