Canine Coat and Nose Color Testing

C128-Canine Coat and Nose Color Test
Italian Greyhound

Italian Grehounds occur in several colors: black, brown, fawn, and rarely clear red . Several genes and the interaction thereof contribute to these colors.
Dilute variations of these colors also occur in IG. The gene causing this is Melanophilin, known as the D locus. However, a DNA test for the d alleles in this breed is not yet available. The table below will therefore only mention the dark colors.
One gene that is necessary for a black or brown coat color is K, and the allele responsible is KB. Italian Greyhounds that are fawn do not have a KB, but are ky/ky. Because all Italian Greyhounds are ay/ay at the A locus, the K locus determines the difference between black and fawn in this breed.
Seal is a color in IG that is not pitch black but all dogs of this color tested have at least one KB allele. Therefore they are not distinguishable from black at this time. Clear red appears to be rare in IG but such dogs could be any genotype at the K locus since they are e/e and this masks the effects of K. Italian Greyhound can have a melanistic mask too. It is not visible on black or brown Italian Greyhound, and is typically quite small on fawn Italian Greyhound. Italian Greyhound can be brown although this color is not common. Fawn Italian Greyhound that are b/b will have a brown nose and pads. If they have a mask, it too will be brown.
In some countries white spotting is allowed, and in others it is not. A DNA test for white spotting is available for $65.00 However, in this breed It appears that most heterozygous S/sp dogs have white legs and undersides so it may not be necessary to test solid dogs to determine which are S/S and which are S/sp. Italian Greyhound that are sp/sp have some to much white on their torso.

Any single tested allele - $55.00*
Each additional allele - $20.00*
* subject to HST for Canadian residents only.

Note: Mask gene (Em) is considered as an individual test, separate from other alleles in E locus.

To help you to calculate the proper amount, please review the following example:
Testing for 3 alleles - E, B, and D - should be calculated as $55 + $20 + $20 = $95.00.
The price will be automaticaly calculated during the process of ordering a sample collection kit.
The following sample(s) can be submitted for the testing:
1. Blood sample in a lavender top tube.
2. Cheek swabs. Sample collection kit online: Order a Sample Collection Kit
Test results are usually available in 10 Business Days from the moment the samples arrive at the laboratory. Test results can be reported by e-mail, fax, or by phone.
HealthGene will provide a certificate for each test result.
