F220 - Feline Blood Typing

Description:

Only one blood group system has been identified in the cat. This blood group system has three blood types: A, B, and AB. Blood types vary among breeds of cats and among geographic locations. Most American cats are type A, and type AB is extremely rare (< 1 per cent of all cats). Type AB is found only in breeds of cats with type B in their population. All cats with blood type B have natural alloantibodies against type A cells, and all type A cats have alloantibodies against type B cells. The anti-B antibodies are generally weak, but both types of antibodies result in shortened red blood cell survival following incompatible transfusion. An acute hemolytic transfusion reaction occurs when type A blood is given to a type B cat. Kittens of type A that are born to a type B queen and allowed to nurse during the first 24 hours of life consume antibodies in the colostrum and are at risk for neonatal isoerythrolysis.

Whole blood (3 ml) in a lavender top (EDTA) tube.
