BREED STANDARDS FOR COAT & NOSE COLORS:

Pug occur in two basic colors: black and fawn. The gene that controls this difference is K.

All Pugs have masks, even though they can’t be seen on the black dogs. Therefore all are E^M/E^M. At the agouti locus, all Pugs are a^y/a^y . All Pugs have black nose leather and pads and are B/B.

The K gene has been identified in a collaborative research effort headed by Greg Barsh with input by Sheila Schmutz and others.
