DNA TEST:
Presence of black and black-and-tan colors, and lack of mask.

BREED STANDARDS FOR COAT & NOSE COLORS:
The wirehaired Belgian Shepherd is the Laekenois. It is typically sable in coat color, although some still carry the allele for black-and-tan or black. Therefore, they can be either a^ya^y or a^ya^t or a^ya. Therefore, if two dogs that both carry either an at or a allele are mated together, some black-and-tan or black pups could occur. Sable in Laekenois is used to denote a predominance of reddish hairs with occasional solid black hairs interspersed. The number of black hairs can vary tremendously, probably under the control of another gene which has not been determined yet. The shade of red can also vary from cream to deep red. This is under the control of yet another gene which we are still searching for. DNA testing to detect the presence of the at or a allele in Laekenois that are sable, allows breeders to better predict the colors of pups from particular matings. Although many Laekenois have a melanistic mask and are therefore E^mE^m, many do not and are EE. The absence of a mask can also be predicted using DNA tests.

Test results are usually available in 10 business days from the moment the samples arrive at the laboratory. Test results can be reported by e-mail, fax, or by phone.

CERTIFICATION OF RESULTS:
