SLOW GROWTH LED THE GIANT MOA TO EXTINCTION

Researchers at the London's Institute of Zoology have analyzed the bones of a 700-year old flightless moa and concluded that this more than 2 m tall bird, was driven to its extinction by slow growth. The concentric rings that represent the annual growth have shown that it took the giant moa at least 10 years to grow to its full size, making it the slowest-growing bird on record. All birds alive today reach full size within a year or so, with sexual maturity following soon after.
The giant moa lived on an island without predators which made them unique from other bird species. Arrival of Maori hunters and their incapability to quickly replace their breeding population are believed to what led the giant moa to extinction.

Avian DNA-based testing has become the choice of professional aviculturalists and avian veterinary specialists for sexing and diagnosis of various infectious diseases. HealthGene is the leading DNA laboratory with an extensive experience in avian diagnostics. We invite you to explore this website and learn more about DNA testing and health-related issues.

NEW RESUBMISSION POLICY AT HEALTHGENE

HealthGene would like to inform clients that starting May 1 2005, only blood samples on cards are accepted for resubmissions free of charge.

There have been a number of cases in which due to poor feather samples clients were asked to resubmit samples for avian DNA sexing several times. HealthGene is testing EVERY sample submitted and if the sample does not contain enough genetic material for proper analysis, HealthGene does not report results and requests samples to be resubmitted. To avoid any delays with the results and to ensure high quality of service, only blood samples will be accepted for free resubmission. All feather samples resubmitted for avian DNA sexing
will be considered as a new submission.
